The Most Frequently Asked Questions About Massage
|
| Question: |
What should I do to prepare before a massage?
|
| Answer: |
You should be clean and free of oils. Some of the therapies that Jeanne employs do not use oils, and skin oils can interfere in myofasical work. The day of your massage, do not apply skin lotions after your shower, or prior to the treatment. Not all treatments require removal of clothing, so you may want to ask the therapist prior to the appointment. For most tretments, you will need to remove all jewelry, and corrective eye lenses. If possible, remove contacts if you wear them, as they may dry out or irritate you during treatment.
Massage therapy can remove facial make-up, so if you have somewhere to go afterwards, you may want to bring make-up with you.
Above all: relax! Rushing to or from a massage session is not recommended. Make sure you set aside enought time to get to the appointment on time, and enough time between the appointment and any other commitments to allow the treatment and the relaxation benefits to settle in.

| Question: |
What do I wear? or not wear, as the case may be? Will I have to remove my clothes?
|
| Answer: |
You can consult with the therapist before hand. Any good professional therapist knows how to give a massage treatment, with the client fully clothed if required. Be sure to let the therapist know exactly what you are comfortable with, and not comfortable with. Remove as much or little of your clothing as you want. You will be covered with clean sheets and blankets at all times. You can arrive at the session in whatever you are wearing, but try to have something on that is not uncomfortable for afterwards. You can also bring clothes to wear afterwards, like sweats, or other favorite comfy clothes.

| Question: |
If I have any medical conditions or diagnoses, will this affect my massage? What does my therapist need to know?
|
| Answer: |
A Massage Therapist needs to know your medical history, as it affects certain choices for massage treatment. Especially as pertains to any current contagious diseases, such as AIDS or communicable skins diseases like Shingles, as they need special consideration.
If you are diabetic, you may bruise easily, and need pressure adjustment during massage. Also, since massage gets the circulation going, and can affect lymph and blood supply, it you have any arterial or vein conditions, like varicose veins or sclerosis (hardening) or the ateries, or are prone to seizures of any kind, the therapist needs to know before hand. Likewise any major medical diagnoses, or medications you are taking, or allergies. Massage Therapists are workers in alternative medicine therapies and treatments, and those treaments interact with your other medical therapies, and it is important for you to inform your therapist, on your first visit, of any current issues, and keep them updated so they can design your treatment plans accordingly. Most therapists ask these questions up front on your first visit anyway.

| Question: |
Can massage treat any specific medical conditions or diagnoses?
|
| Answer: |
Massage on the physical body and energy work have provided great results in pain relief and management, rehabilitation of injury, and relief of other symptoms for a great number of diseases and injury types. Ask your therapist if you are pursuing treatment for a particular illness or set of symptoms. Also, check out these testimonials from current clients of North Point Therapeutic Massage.

| Question: |
Is there anything special I can expect or need to do afterwards?
|
| Answer: |
You can expect to feel relaxed, and somtimes a little sleepy or not quite focused. We have a great waiting area with comfortable chairs so you can rest afterwards until these effects pass. Everyone is different in their response to therapy and different types of therapy produces different results and after effects.
You should always drink a lot of water after a massage, as massage frequently "loosens" toxins in the body, that the body will want to flush from the blood stream. This is actually very good for you, so you may want to bring a water bottle. We have spring water here for you as well. There are little energy "tricks" the therapists can do after a massage to "ground" your energy so you feel more alert, too.
